My Spiritual Journey to Omkareshwar: Parikrama, Narmada Snan & Jyotirlinga Darshan

Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh is a revered pilgrimage site nestled on the sacred Om-shaped Mandhata Island in the Narmada River. It proudly hosts the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, which is a powerful manifestation of the supreme cosmic power Lord Shiva.

The nearby Mamleshwar Mahadev temple, located on the mainland across the river, draws millions of devotees. Moreover, trekking the divine parikrama path and taking a holy dip in the Narmada make every moment feel deeply spiritual.

How to Reach Omkareshwar

Omkareshwar is well connected to Indore and Khandwa by road. You can reach Indore or Khandwa by train, and then take a bus to reach the place. For the people travelling from North India, Indore would be the better option, while Khandwa could be better for others. Omkareshwar is situated nearly 80 km from either of the cities. If you are travelling by air, Indore should be the best option.

Things to do at Omkareshwar

Omkareshwar is famous for one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Shri Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, which is said to be paired with Mamleshwar Lingam. Apart from paying visits to these temples, you can:

  • Perform Omakar Island Parikrama.
  • Dip in the Holy Narmada River.
  • Visit well-architectured Temples like Vishnu Temple and Hanuman Temple.

Divine Darshan: Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga

No trip to Omkareshwar is complete without visiting the revered Jyotirlingas. I first visited the Omkareshwar temple that houses one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple, located on the island, has a vibrant spiritual energy. Despite the crowd, there was a sense of devotion and calmness that made the darshan truly fulfilling. Remember, the crowd is often so much that you may have to remain in line for over five hours. However, if you have devoted yourself to God, you will enjoy every moment from being queued to entering the temple.

After crossing the bridge, I visited the equally significant Mamleshwar Temple, situated on the mainland. Many believe that both temples together complete the Jyotirlinga darshan.

The architecture, the rituals, and the chants in both temples created an atmosphere that was powerful and peaceful.

Omkar Island Parikrama: A Walk around Divinity

One of the most unique experiences in Omkareshwar is the Parikrama of Omkar Island. This sacred trek, stretching roughly 7–8 km, circles the entire island and is believed to cleanse the soul. For me, it is not just a belief, as I have experienced the peace, divinity, bliss, and blessings during the trek.

I started late in the evening, though, was advised by the locals not to do the trek at night. Therefore, I walked faster but couldn’t help myself from stopping at beautiful temples and scenic viewpoints.

The entire path has been accompanied by cemented billboards with the carvings of Bhagavad Gita Shlokas and their meaning. This was one of the best things I have seen during the trek. These boards were serving two purposes; they were showing the right path of parikrama as well as the path of righteous living.

There were many beautiful temples, most of which were closed due to safety concerns in the forest region. On the path, there is also a huge and beautiful statue of Adishankaracharya, which was part of an under-development cultural corridor. The corridor also houses a large statue of Mahadev, which further enhances the overall spiritual ambience.

As I moved forward, it started to get dark, leading to safety concerns in that desolate site. However, Mahadev intervened, and the trek ended in the next 15 minutes, dropping me at the Jyotirlinga temple. The parikrama, which I thought would take an hour more, was completed like a miracle.

Narmada River: A Sacred Bath and Mesmerizing Views

The next morning was the day to dip in the translucent water of the Narmada. I walked from my hotel room to the riverbank early in the morning. As I stepped into the river, the cool water felt refreshing, almost as if it was washing away not just physical fatigue but also mental clutter.

After taking a bath in the river, I walked towards the uncrowded banks of the river. The sight was calming with gentle waves, devotees offering prayers, and the golden reflection of sunlight on the water. The statue of Adishankaracharya on the hills across the river made the scene even more captivating.

The calm flow of the Narmada River defines the beauty of Omkareshwar, with the distant presence of Adi Shankaracharya enriching the view.

Sitting by the riverside afterward and watching the flow of the river, brought a sense of stillness that is hard to find in everyday life. It was one of those rare moments where time slows down.

The Essence of Omkareshwar: More than Just a Destination

What makes Omkareshwar truly special is not just its temples or scenic beauty, but the feeling it leaves you with.

  • The Parikrama teaches patience and devotion.
  • The Narmada River offers peace and purification.
  • The Jyotirlinga darshan connects you to something beyond yourself.
  • The open hall of the Vishnu temple offers nostalgia for ancient times.

This journey made me realize that sometimes, stepping away from routine and immersing yourself in spirituality can bring clarity and calmness like nothing else.
